{"id":2444,"date":"2023-07-04T10:25:08","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T09:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/?p=2444"},"modified":"2023-07-04T10:34:24","modified_gmt":"2023-07-04T09:34:24","slug":"retevis-rt85-antenna-swr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/?p=2444","title":{"rendered":"Retevis RT85 antenna SWR"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since purchasing my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Retevis-Handheld-Transceiver-Amateur-Adventure-Black\/dp\/B08G1FQZ74\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Retevis RT85<\/a> 2m\/70cm handheld radio I&#8217;ve noticed that it seems rather deaf when using the antenna that came with the radio and isn&#8217;t as strong into the local repeaters as I imagined it would be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Considering the local 2m and 70cm repeater isn&#8217;t that far from my QTH and there is pretty much a clear line of site view in the direction of the repeater I was somewhat surprised that on 70cm the repeater never breaks the squelch, even if it is set on it&#8217;s lowest setting of zero.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-1175x2700.jpeg\" alt=\"M0AWS Retevis RT85 dual band VHF\/UHF Handheld Radio\" class=\"wp-image-2457\" width=\"212\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-1175x2700.jpeg 1175w, https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-768x1765.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-668x1536.jpeg 668w, https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-891x2048.jpeg 891w, https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-scaled.jpeg 1114w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">M0AWS Retevis RT85 dual band VHF\/UHF Handheld Radio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connecting my home made <a href=\"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/?p=1629\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">end fed dual band vertical dipole<\/a> at 10m above ground the performance of the radio improves drastically as one would expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having recently purchased a <a href=\"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/?p=2384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JNCRadio VNA 3G<\/a> antenna analyser I decided to connect the Retevis supplied antenna to the analyser and see what the resonance was like on the two bands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The antenna is labelled as 136-174Mhz and 400-470Mhz. This is an extremely wide frequency range for such a small antenna and clearly isn&#8217;t going to perform that well over such a wide bandwidth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connecting the antenna to the VNA and setting the stimulus frequency range to 144-148Mhz I found that the SWR curve of the antenna wasn&#8217;t particularly good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-ant-swr-2m-scaled.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1311\" src=\"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-ant-swr-2m-2048x1311.jpeg\" alt=\"M0AWS Retevis RT85 Antenna SWR Curve 2m\" class=\"wp-image-2451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-ant-swr-2m-2048x1311.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-ant-swr-2m-300x192.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-ant-swr-2m-768x492.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/M0AWS-Retevis-RT85-ant-swr-2m-1536x983.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">M0AWS Retevis RT85 Antenna SWR Curve 2m<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As shown above the SWR curve on the 2m Band is pretty poor. At 144.0Mhz it&#8217;s just over 3:1, at 145.496 (closest I could get to the 145.500 calling channel) the SWR is still 2.1:1. The antenna doesn&#8217;t really get close to resonance until 148Mhz where the SWR is 1.46:1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an SWR this high the radio will almost certainly be reducing the O\/P power considerably to protect the PA stage from over heating due to so much power be reflected back into the transmitter.
