{"id":3505,"date":"2024-10-06T00:14:23","date_gmt":"2024-10-05T23:14:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/?p=3505"},"modified":"2024-10-06T00:14:23","modified_gmt":"2024-10-05T23:14:23","slug":"iss-special-event-contact-with-astronaut-sunita-williams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/?p=3505","title":{"rendered":"ISS Special Event contact with Astronaut Sunita Williams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A special event organised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/rsgb.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RSGB<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ariss.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)<\/a>, in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/uk-space-agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK Space Agency<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ggsw.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Girlguiding Surrey West<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklandsmuseum.com\/learning\/brooklands-innovation-academy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brooklands Museum\u2019s Innovation Academy<\/a> programme took place today and I was fortunate enough to actually receive the signal from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/international-space-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ISS<\/a> as it passed over Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contact with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/people\/sunita-l-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA astronaut Sunita Williams<\/a> was also attended by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/duchess-edinburgh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Duchess of Edinburgh<\/a> who asked the first question via radio to the NASA astronaut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following this a number of girl guides posed questions which were very quickly answered as the ISS passed overhead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using my new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamradio.co.uk\/wouxun-kg-uv980pl-pd-9329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wouxun UV-980PL<\/a> and simple end-fed vertical dipole I got a great signal from the ISS HAM radio station and was able to receive the ISS side of the conversation as the space station approached the N\/W Coast of Spain until it eventually dropped below the horizon out of site nearing East Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below is a short video clip with audio showing the clarity of reception.
