{"id":4624,"date":"2026-03-30T16:52:02","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T15:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/?p=4624"},"modified":"2026-04-09T12:53:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T11:53:17","slug":"iss-astronaut-talks-to-uk-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/?p=4624","title":{"rendered":"ISS Astronaut talks to UK students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_Langton_Grammar_School_for_Boys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canterbury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canterbury, Kent UK<\/a>, today had the opportunity to talk to astronaut <a href=\"https:\/\/amsat-uk.org\/2026\/03\/29\/iss-astronaut-to-use-amateur-radio-to-talk-to-uk-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jack Hathaway, KJ5NIV<\/a>, aboard the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Space_Station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Space Station<\/a> (ISS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Checking the ISS pass data I could see it was going to be a good pass for me to listen and so I setup my <a href=\"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/?p=3561\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wouxun KG-UV980P<\/a> quad bander on 145.800Mhz to see if I could hear Jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having only a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamradio.co.uk\/diamond-v-2000-pd-2592?srsltid=AfmBOorbzUUQhjc5MSlxw9Let0sXfDI0UV3bz0cPrhhYZOwUEstPC7RX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diamond V2000 vertical antenna<\/a>, I don&#8217;t have the best station for satellite communications however, it has worked well in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sure enough, as the ISS approached the UK from the South West and reached 2deg above the horizon the signal started coming through. Below is the video I took of the pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/m0aws.co.uk\/video\/M0AWS-ISS-Pass-30-03-2026.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I ended the video at 6min and 35sec as I thought I&#8217;d lost the satellite as it was out to the East over Russia and blocked by farm buildings near my QTH however, once I stopped videoing I remembered to move the VFO down 5Khz and sure enough I was able to hear the ISS right up until the point that Jack signed and ended the QSO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I really should try to see if I can get some QSO&#8217;s via the ISS FM Repeater as the received signal really is very good.
